The Consumer SIM Trap is what happens when an IoT product team makes a SIM decision the way a consumer electronics team would. The decision is rational at the time. Removable SIMs are cheap. They're flexible. They mean you can swap carriers if the first relationship doesn't work out. They look like the safe choice. Three years later, after the fleet has scaled past a hundred thousand devices, the team realises that none of those advantages actually apply to the way IoT devices are deployed in the field.
